An Online MUSIC ARCHIVE of a Special Kind

South Tyrol's musical heritage digitized

Between the Alps and the Dolomites lies South Tyrol – an autonomous province in northern Italy with its own history, language, and culture. What many do not know: The country also offers an impressive variety musically. This variety is now accessible online – in the new South Tyrolean MUSIC ARCHIVE of the Provincial Office for Film and Media of Bolzano.

The Assignment

BREITETIEFE partner teamblau implemented the project on behalf of the Province of South Tyrol visually, conceptually, and technically – creating a modern portal that is simultaneously an archive, an experience space, and a stage for South Tyrol's musical heritage.
The mission: Make music visible. Preserve. Make accessible.

Whether historical field recordings, local bands, or experimental sounds – the archive tells of the acoustic identity of a region that pulses between tradition and the present. The archive impresses not only with its content but also with its graphic refinement and user-friendly structure.

User Guidance with Depth Effect

The heartpiece: an intelligent search function that can do more than just deliver hit lists.
Search for performers, album titles, songs, genres, time periods – and navigate chronologically via a vertical timeline that is filter, interface, and visual narrative all at once.
An experience that provides orientation and simultaneously tells history.

Web Design, UX, Corporate

Our design highlight: Each album view automatically adopts a color scheme generated from the respective cover – creating an aesthetic connection between sound, zeitgeist, and visual language.
The albums are categorized by genres and subgenres, accompanied by small icons that inform about the original medium in the provincial archive – whether CD, cassette, or vinyl record. A loving detail that not only evokes nostalgia but also makes the archive more tangible.

The logo also comes from the BREITETIEFE collective: In two language versions – to match the cultural context of South Tyrol – and modern, reduced, yet with strong recognition value. It symbolizes the archive's self-conception: cultural openness, regional depth, and digital accessibility.

Impact & Reach

In June 2025, the portal went online – and struck the right note: Media like RAI South Tyrol, ORF South Tyrol Heute, Stol.it, FF, and Salto.bz reported on the project and praised its contribution to the cultural visibility of the region.
For us, this project was more than just an assignment – it was a contribution to the cultural visibility of a region with many voices. With the MUSIC ARCHIVE, a platform was created that not only stores music but makes it an experience. Art, technology, and cultural mediation come together here to create a digital space that radiates far beyond South Tyrol.
